Design Your World Launches in St. Louis and Expands in Miami

by Adriana Morton

The Design Your World program continues its growth as it wraps up a year of design education in two cities. This year, Design Your World wrapped up their second Summer session in Miami, while at the same time completing their first year of programming in St. Louis, MO.

Design Your World (Miami) launched last summer at Florida International University, partnering with Black Artists In The Making and Fresh Artists to introduce young students to design careers.

Taught by Kenzie Leon Perry, a creative director at Ze Haus Design Studio, the program focuses on equity, diversity, and empowerment by inviting a diverse group of creative teens (13-18 years old) to experience the commercial design industry. The students join a four-week immersive design education program at Florida International University, exploring color theory, layout, storytelling, textiles, and creating a portfolio. Sales representatives, architects, and interior designers also present about their various roles throughout the industry to highlight possible career paths.

I can talk about design, furniture, sustainability, and the workplace all day long. But I think my greatest impact on these students was stressing the importance of using your voice and communicating confidently.
- Maria VanDeman, OFS Workplace Advisor

The Design Your World program expanded to St Louis, MO this year, bringing design education to another city’s students! From July 10-21, the St. Louis class participated in a two-week program connecting them to the local design community.

Design Your World introduces students to the power of design and the possibility of a career in the design industry. Design shapes the world we live in, our environments, from the way we work to the way we shop to how we are transported through our cities. By creating a more diverse and equitable design industry, we can shape a brighter more creative future for our world. OFS is proud to sponsor this program and be a part of creating that future.
